COMPUTER HARDWARE - LTS-001: LAB TECH SUPPORT
LTS-001: Lab Tech Support

In the lab we often evaluate a wide variety of hardware we purchase from 3rd parties and integrate into larger systems. In many cases we obtain hardware from Ebay or Amazon suppliers, combine it with open source software, and then we make it all work together effectively to present a single coherent solution to our clients.
For example we may load XBMC software onto a variety of 3rd party linux boxes. We test a variety of input pointing devices to ensure they all work well with that software on the box. These devices may include a wired mouse, wired keyboard, air mouse, IR remote control, bluetooth mini-keyboard, bluetooth mouse, bluetooth full keyboard, etc.
In addition to testing hardware inter-operability, you would also work out the key mapping to ensure appropriate keys on each type of remote control or keyboard triggered appropriate functions in the software. You would then create the necessary script or configuration file to implement this key mapping for the systems we sell using these devices.
To speed up the configuration process for each linux box we sell, you would create an image file of a fully configured system and clone it onto subsequent identical hardware boxes. In other cases, you would simply document the configuration process and automate it as much as possible.
Knowledge of Linux commands is an asset. If you have some experience writing scripts (in Python or Perl), or even writing an application in Android, Java, or C that is excellent. Knowing how to build a Linux Application using
Makefile is a big plus. Knowing how to configure a complete Linux-based system is icing on the cake. Experience creating Linux drivers for hardware and integrating them into a Linux bootload image would be fantastic. Don't be discouraged if you don't have all this experience, if you join us you will likely be exposed to all this over time.
No formal training is required, but it cannot hurt. What we really look for is someone who LOVES tinkering with electronics technology and computers and software.
Please tell us about the programs you have written, the circuits you have built, your hobby projects or school projects that worked well, or didn't work at all. Are you into Robotics? Artificial Intelligence? Image Recognition? If so tell us because that tells us a lot about you. If you have used the Arduino or Raspberry Pi for some project, we want to hear what you have done with them.

I-001: Installer -- $18 per hour We often install over-the-air antennas in our client's attic, satellite dishes, and decoder boxes, DSL Modems, Cable Modems, Wifi Routers, Wifi Range Extenders, Powerline Modem Range Extenders, WiFi Amplifiers and Yagi Antennas for extended line of sight communication, Chromecast TV dongles, Video Cards and HDMI cables for PCs, Remote Control IR Receivers for PCs, Android TV Set Top boxes, Roku TV Set Top Boxes, Apple TV Set Top Boxes, International IPTV Set Top Boxes, Security Camera IPTV systems, and so on. You will receive training on the job (paid), but you must have some aptitude or prior experience in this area or some similar area (such as security alarm installation for instance). When installing equipment at a client location: You must be comfortable working in clients' homes, and be punctual, neat and presentable. You must NOT have a criminal record. You must be physically fit, able to carry equipment and ladders up to the 2nd floor of the clients home without bumping into walls. You must be able to climb a ladder into the client's attic, balance on the trusses there and avoid disturbing the insulation too much, make a few measurements with a tape measure, operate an electric hand drill, fish coax wire through interior walls, operate a stapler, crimp coax connectors onto the end of coax cable, and so on. Once out of the attic, you must be able to configure a clients modem, router, or wifi device using a laptop computer. All necessary equipment is supplied. You must have a car, and a clean driving record. You should be familiar with key internet technologies frequently found in residential homes. You should have experience setting-up home networking in a Windows environment. You should understand how to setup a WiFi connection. You should have experience with Windows, Mac, or Android (at least 2 of the 3).
